Charter is priced in hours, not miles

Almost every surprise on a first charter quote traces back to the same misunderstanding: buyers price the trip the way they price a drive, and the invoice prices it the way an operator runs an aircraft. A charter bill is billed flight hours multiplied by the cabin’s hourly rate, plus a fixed per-trip block for landing, handling, crew and catering, plus tax. Distance only matters because it is one input into hours.

Two adjustments sit between raw flight time and billed hours, and between them they explain most of what looks like overcharging. Operators apply a daily minimum of roughly 2 hours, so a leg that blocks in under an hour is billed as though it took two. And unless an aircraft happens to be sitting at your departure field, someone has to fly it there empty and fly it home again afterwards — repositioning, which our estimates amortise as a 30% uplift on flight hours. The arithmetic falls out clearly across this route set. The worst value per mile is MiamiNassau at about $48 per nautical mile; the best is New YorkMiami at about $16, a spread of 3.0× on the same rate engine. Note which is which: MiamiNassau is the cheaper trip in absolute terms ($7,900 against $15,300) and still the dearer one per mile. Neither figure is a mistake, and per-mile is simply the wrong unit for deciding anything.

Tax splits the same way. A US domestic leg carries the 7.5% federal excise tax on air transportation. An international leg is exempt from it, but picks up customs, immigration, overflight and international handling instead — which is why the 4 border-crossing routes below are not simply their domestic equivalents plus distance.

Routes by distance band

Grouped the way the pricing actually behaves. Each band is a different cost regime, and knowing which one your trip sits in tells you more about the quote than the city pair does.

Short hops · Under 600 nm

6 routes · 163370 nm · $7,200$10,300 · $48$19/nm

The daily minimum, not the distance, sets the floor on these legs. A 40-minute flight still bills the industry-standard two hours, which is why the cost per mile looks brutal and the absolute cost is still the lowest on the board. Light jets own this band.

Regional legs · 600–1,499 nm

10 routes · 637978 nm · $11,400$27,200 · $23$16/nm

Here the aircraft is genuinely working for its money: billed hours finally exceed the daily minimum, so price tracks distance more or less honestly. This is midsize territory, and it is the band where sizing up one cabin class costs the least relative to what you gain.

Transcon & oceanic · 1,500 nm and up

4 routes · 1,5483,079 nm · $30,400$134,200 · $25$19/nm

Range, not seats, picks the aircraft. A cabin that needs a fuel stop turns a nonstop into a two-leg day, so the practical shortlist narrows to super-midsize and heavy metal, and the hourly rate difference compounds over every hour of a long leg.

Which cabin these routes call for

The recommendation on each route page is the smallest cabin that seats a representative party and still makes the leg nonstop at about 85% of the aircraft’s brochure range, because real payload, reserves and headwinds derate the published figure. That is a deliberately conservative rule: it will not put you on a midsize for a full transcontinental nonstop.

Cabin classHourly rateRoutes recommended
Light Jets$2,600–3,8006
Midsize Jets$3,600–5,2008
Super-Midsize$5,200–7,6005
Heavy & Ultra-Long$8,200–14,5001

Every route page prices all four classes side by side, so you can see what sizing up costs before you decide. Full specs and examples are in the aircraft guide.

If your dates flex

The same corridor, at a repositioning price

Repositioning is a cost on a standard charter and an opportunity on an empty leg: the operator has to fly the aircraft anyway, so the seat sells at a discount to whoever will take the operator’s schedule instead of setting their own. It is the single largest saving available on the routes above, and the only real cost is flexibility on date, time and occasionally airport. Set an empty-leg alert for your corridor, or compare charter against jet cards and fractional programmes if you fly the same route often enough to prepay.

Charter route FAQ

How much does a private jet charter cost per route?

It depends far more on flight hours than on miles. Across the 20 routes on this page the recommended-cabin "from" price runs $7,200 for Los Angeles–Las Vegas up to $134,200 at the top of the New York–London band. Per mile the ranking reshuffles entirely, because the recommended cabin changes underneath it: Miami–Nassau works out at roughly $48 per nautical mile against about $16 for New York–Miami. Open any route below for its full per-class table.

Why is a short private jet flight so expensive per mile?

Two structural costs that a distance-based intuition misses. First, the industry-standard daily minimum: operators bill a floor of about 2 hours per day, so a 0h 46m leg like New York–Boston still bills roughly two hours of aircraft time. Second, repositioning: if no aircraft is sitting at your departure airport, the operator ferries one in empty and amortises that leg into your quote, which our estimates carry as a 30% uplift on flight hours. Neither shrinks just because your trip is short.

Which aircraft class should I book for my route?

Range decides it before comfort does. Our engine recommends the smallest cabin that both seats the party and makes the distance nonstop at about 85% of the aircraft's brochure range, because real payload, fuel reserves and headwinds derate the published number. Across this route set that works out to 6 on light jets, 8 on midsize jets, 5 on super-midsize, 1 on heavy & ultra-long. Every route page shows all four classes priced side by side so you can see exactly what sizing up costs.

Are these charter prices quotes?

No. They are estimates from the same 2026 rate engine that powers our calculator, built from published market hourly rates by cabin class plus the fixed per-trip costs (landing, handling, crew, catering, segment fees) and the applicable taxes. US domestic legs carry the 7.5% federal excise tax; international legs are exempt from it but add customs, immigration and international handling. Your final price comes from the operator in a written quote, which an advisor returns within about 15 minutes.

Do you charter international routes?

Yes. 4 of the 20 routes priced here cross a border — New York to London, Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas, Miami to Nassau, Houston to Cabo San Lucas — and we arrange charters well beyond the corridors listed on this page. If your city pair is not here, the route cost calculator prices any pair in our airport database, or an advisor will quote it directly.

Can I fly one of these routes cheaper on an empty leg?

Sometimes, and the saving can be substantial. An empty leg is an aircraft repositioning without passengers — the operator has to fly it regardless, so it sells at a discount. The catch is that you take the operator's schedule rather than your own: the date, the time and occasionally the airport are fixed. If your plans flex by a day or two on a corridor we cover, it is worth setting an alert before booking a standard charter.

All figures on this page are estimates from our 2026 rate engine for a representative party, one-way, and are not quotes or guaranteed offers. Actual pricing varies with aircraft availability, repositioning, routing, dates and taxes, and is set by the operator in writing.
